Morning sun plants in afternoon sun area

Williams7165February 1, 2013

Hello,

I live in an apartment and my balcony is on the west, and only receives afternoon sun. Is there a way to put a screen or lattice over the plants that are meant for morning sun only so they are shaded and get filtered afternoon sun instead? I'm trying to find a way to get morning sun bonsai to thrive in an afternoon sun area.

What plants are you trying to grow? Many plants that do well in shade will do fine if you can protect them from midday sun - like from 11-6 in the summer.

I didn't have specific plants just yet, but one idea was an Azalea.

I was reading some plant descriptions on ones I liked and some say "Morning sun with afternoon shade only" So I was looking into a solution to prevent them from getting too hot and still get enough sun on the west side of a building. (Afternoon sun only area). Will some shade cloth work? Something like a tight mesh over it?

That, or you can buy plastic lattice in 4x8 sheets that will work, too.

Shade cloth would give you a filtered light. Even plain old screen wire cuts down a lot of light.
Good Luck
