HAVE: Mertensia virginica - mature tuberous roots. native dug

onlychange(7a VA)March 28, 2009

I dug these myself from the creekbanks of the openquon river in northern virginia while I was visiting family.

They are currently growing, and some may need to be trimmed back for shipping... they do go dormant in summer.

this is an absolute shade lover (they grow in near darkness.. so hard to keep them dormant when it gets slightly warm). hardy zones 3-9. I would think these come up and bloom right after hellebore do. These were popping up the first week of march in zone 6b. Temps were high 20's at night.

The tuberous roots on the right are the ones I intend on trading.. the mature ones. The ones on the left are the offsets, showing relative age of the larger ones.

I have about 5 VERY large clumps, 30 mature tubers, and 20 offsets.
