WANTED: Help for shipping bulbs advice

Jean HiddenApril 22, 2006

I am requesting shipping advice for bulbs: iris crestata and lily of valley. They are done blooming but the leaves have not died back.

Can they safely be shipped now, or do I have to wait until the folliage starts dying back. And if they can be shipped now through priority mail, how to do so? Wrapped in dry paper? What if they have roots, and leaves?

Is it best not to even try to wrap the roots in moist paper (newspaper or paper towels), then wrap with plastic (except leaving the leaves out)? Do I leave the bulbs dry regardless?

HI. I don't know the answer, but you will have more help on the discussion forum (not the exchange - it's really slow moving)

They are still growing so you want to treat them like any other growing plant. Moist paper towels and plastic around the bulb part. I even did this to Multiflowering Hyacinths before bloom. The trader planted them, and they bloomed like nothing had happened.

Just like Remy said. I use a grocery bag over the damp paper towels, and keep twisting & doubling it up (so it's actually like 2 or 3 bags wrapped around the bulbs), then tie the handles really snug.

If the box isn't a perfect fit, I use crushed paper to keep the bulb plants from shifting around in the box (protects the greens).
