Premature sprouting in stored bulbs

wishfulgardenFebruary 14, 2009

I have a bunch of calla lillies and gladiolus bulbs that I pulled in the fall to store. They were nice and dry, but we've had some warm days recently. They're in my basement, in boxes lined with sand, but now it seems that they're sprouting.

What should I do to salvage them? I've still got about a month or two before I can safely plant them in the ground.

That happens with my calla every year, Don't worry they wont grow too much, so you can just leave them right where they are until you plant them, they should grow and bloom fine, as long as there is nothing wrong with the bulb, like to diseases. hope this info helps.

Oh good- Not all of them have sprouted, but some actually have 1 1/2 inches of growth, so I was quite concerned! Thanks so much. :)
