Mystery edible bulb?

BatsukamanMarch 22, 2013

I was recently in NYC Chinatown, and I was interested in some bulbs that were for sale in vegetable markets. I asked the people there what they were, and one fellow (who did not speak English very well) replied "water nut." They didn't look like any definition of water chestnuts I've seen pictures of; I'd say they looked a little more like crocus bulbs. Does anyone have an idea of what they could be? If they're something I could plant I'd like to go get some ASAP.

Without a picture of them, you might just have to buy and plant and then get them identified.

I'd say they are water chestnets.
