Is 40 degrees too cold?

sharbear50(6a Bella Vista)January 29, 2012

I put all my potted plants outside on my screened porch and it is chilly out. Weather is expected to go down in the 40's tonight and 10 mph wind. Should I bring them in?

I think it will warm back up tomorrow. Will one night hurt them?

I would cover them up. Any veggies that are not cold tolerant, bring inside.

It could. Many plants suffer chill injury at temps that high, especially if the temperature falls rapidly. Covering, as Bob suggests, helps trap the warmer earth's heat and helps moderate temps under the cover significantly. covering works best if the cover goes all the way to the ground, all around the pots. It's too late now, but for next time chill is expected, slightly drought stressed plants are less susceptible to chill injury.
