forgotten crocus bulbs..zone 5..end of march

xena45March 29, 2013

I know, I'm a bad person. I ordered a bunch of bulbs last fall, and got a lot of them planted, but my eyes were bigger than my stomach...if you know what I mean.

So anyway, I have a bunch of crocus bulbs that have wintered on the basement floor in the dark. The bulbs are firm and have half inch or so of growth, but no roots. We are having colder than usual weather here in southern wisconsin - 40s during the day, below freezing at night, My daffodils are coming up outside, but only just...they are about an inch or two tall.

So, can these poor crocus bulbs be saved? What do you recommend?

I would plant them asap and keep your fingers crossed. No advantage in storing them any longer IMO.

You are not a bad person and I really do know what you mean...lol

Yes, just plant as soon as the soil is workable, and they should be fine.

If it will make you feel any better, I have bulbs (daffodils) that still need planting. I hope to get at least 'some' of them planted today. There is a chance of rain tomorrow and Mon...sigh.
