Black Thumb / Question on Tulip Bulbs

sameboat(5)April 4, 2011

In early October I was gifted a bag of tulip bulbs (in Zone 5). I was ill at the time and did not have the energy or desire to plant them. They have been in my garage in the bag over the winter and I am wondering if there is anything I can do with them besides tossing them into the mulch pile. It's a shame. From what I've been reading, it's too late to plant them in the ground or in a pot. In my mind I was thinking I could plant them in a big planter in the Spring but now I see they needed time in November to grow roots...any hope or suggestions for me?

I don't know much about bulbs, but I ran across an article just yesterday about forcing bulbs. You could at least try it, right?

you might as well try and get them in the ground. Your chances might not be great, but you never know!

They should grow at least, flowering is another story.

If the bulbs are still firm, and if they were kept in an unheated place over the winter they may do something if planted now. In any case I would plant them if you have the space, as they may survive and bloom next spring. Al
