Take a look at my unusual green tipped daffodil mutant

gottagarden(z5 western NY)April 14, 2012

I appear to have a very unusual sport of daffodil "ice king". I have a couple of these in the middle of a big clump of Ice King.

Have you ever seen green tipped daffodils? I grow many different kinds but have never seen any like this. From Garden Misc

I hate to say this, but it isn't a 'sport' or even all that uncommon. I see it often here on daffodils I grow, and just asked a knowledgeable friend about why it happens or what causes it.

The way I understand it is that it happens most often on Division 4 'Double' Daffodils. Because they are doubles, it often takes them longer to open than the other divisions. Abnormal temperature 'swings' will cause the bloom to start to open with warmer temps, and then cause it to stop opening and/or growing, when the temperature swings abnormally to much cooler than normal temperatures. This will often result in the tips of the petals and/or cup to have green tips.

When exhibiting double daffodils in competition, it is common to cut the bloom, and put it is some sugar water to get the green to disappear and the petals and cup to color up as they are supposed to be.
