Why do tulip and daffodil change their color?

levadiaApril 19, 2009

Tulip Dutch Fair: yellow petals with red short lines - planted in 2000 became all red in 2008

Narcissus Salome: white petals with light pink cup (center) changed the color of its trumpet to yellow.

Why does this change of color occurs?

Thank you.

Sorry I don't know about the tulips, but do know that Salome blooms will open as 'not pink' but something more like cream, or peachy cream, or something similar. Their true color develops as the bloom ages to maturity. The mature color is the color referred to when it is described for sale, or by Daff folks.

Various stages of Salome blooms None of those pics really show how pink it is in real life when the bloom is mature. Mine were a lot pinker than those shown.

Another example is Mrs. R. O. Backhouse which is white petals and a pink cup. shown here at various stages of maturity
Again...mine were a lot more pink than those pictured.
