Storing bulbs

goodbyekitty(Zone 6 Wa/Sunset 3)May 8, 2010

I know, it's too early for this. Last year I bought a caladium and just let it go when the frost came. So wasteful and it was beautiful and happy where it was.

This year I don't want to make that mistake and when it begins to stop growing I want to store the bulbs properly. Our garage on any winter day is only about 10 to 15 degrees warmer during the winter. We can get pretty cold here. I read that caladiums need to rest in 50 degree warmth, which my garage will not be during the dead of winter.

What does everyone else do?

I keep all my bulbs and tubers in my basement which stays between 45-60 degrees. Not the most ideal temps, but I have not lost very many.

In my experience, keeping the humidity low is the/my biggest challenge.

Package them on the dry side, package them well and check on them once a month.

Best of luck.

I don't have a basement but I have about a 3' tall crawl space. I could put a thermometer down there and monitor temps.

It it gets too cold I could bring them in the house and put them in the laundry room. What happens if the bulbs are put in room temps?
