Elephants ear and caladiums

chastityiMay 27, 2010

I planted one elephant ear bulb and 7 caladium bulbs nearly 4 weeks ago and have not yet seen any growth emerge from the soil yet. Does anyone know if I should just give them more time to emerge or if I should give up on them? I thought I had picked out good bulbs, no soft spots, etc and have them planted in part shade with the right amount of water. However we had a late freeze that happened 4-5 days after I planted them. I would appreciate any feedback.

Thanks,

Chastity

Both of these need warm soil. EE will readily rot if planted into cold soil. I would dig up one of the EE and see if it is rotting. Al

Yes, indeed. What Al said. Caladiums are very sensitive to cold soil too. If you can find them and they're not rotted, I'd pot them up and keep them inside until your soil is warm enough. Even at that, depending on the variety you have, you could lose the EE anyway. Don't plant either one outside until your night lows are consistently above 55.

Chastity,

You should be about 60 degrees at night by now. Check the bulbs, if they look okay then just leave them.

Both bulbs for me sit and do nothing until the temps reach 90-60* day/night, then they just take off!

Can you get the pots into full sun to help warm the soil?
