companion for tulips?

what would be a good summer blooming companion for tulips? the area looks so icky when the tulips are done for the year

Dianthus, Gaillardia, Verbena, Geranium or Pelargonium, Lychnis, Penstemon - fairly drought-tolerant and giving shelter to the soil. Verbascum. Viscaria. Zinnia.
