Mystery Bonsai!

phorsakenDecember 28, 2008

Hey everyone, hoping you can help me identify a little Bonsai I picked up today. I normally don't buy my Bonsai, but this little guy was really looking neglected and sad when I was down in Chinatown this morning. It looks to be at least a couple years old, (I noticed some old wiring that has become part of the trunk), and it really has a nice shape, (once I trimmed away a lot of the old and dead growth).

Thanks in advance!

Ulmus parvifolia - Chinese elm, and definitely for outside where you live.

Is the old wiring good for the trunk?
Seems like that would be a serious detriment.

I think is an Ulmus parvifolia, I think it is the species and not a named variety. 'Seiju' has much smaller leaves and much more warted bark.
As for the wiring, if you can remove it, you should, it may girdle the trunk.

In the image, I think you can see that the wire is already embedded in parts of the upper branches. Maybe I'm seeing wrong....
