bulbs in weeds

Normnot(6)June 5, 2012

our nearly 100 year old bulb bank has become overgrown with weeds. I have removed the weeds; had them removed by some young boys but they come back. My thought is to remove the ones that are left, place them in storage, and kill everything else on the bank

More information should be given. What bulbs are involved, and what is your location? Al

and which weeds? And why now?

For example: if someone has decided that patches of violets would be 'lovely' nearby you will be picking out violet seedlings forever unless you add 'violet grooming' to the work list. Or remove them.

If you've changed your garden maintenance work routine to cut down on overheads - you're reaping the results.

If your next door neighbour within 100 yards or so is growing something with bird-carried or airborne seeds - you're on a hiding to nothing trying to keep the weeds down - particularly if the birds can perch over your bulb patches.

And the weeds may be 'saying' something about the levels of soil fertility. If it's been a while since there were light applications of well-cured and multi-sourced compost in the area then a hungry soil could be underlying the problem.
