Sapwood in Bark Fines?

shazaam(NC 7B)February 28, 2011

I've been happily using Al's 5-1-1 mix for a couple of years now, but, despite quite a bit of searching, there's one question that I haven't seen asked or answered: will a small percentage of sapwood in bark fines pose a significant problem to N availability in the final mix? It seems inevitable that some sapwood will end up in fines, but the most recent yard I purchased has a bit more than I'm used to seeing (definitely single digits...probably something on the order of 5%).

If I remember correctly, Al told me at one time, no more than 10% by volume. But cant say for sure.

I'm sure he'll be along soon and correct me if i'm wrong. ;-)

I know it can be annoying. I just made a small batch of gritty mix, and am picking out some of the sapwood as I read some posts. LOL!

It's cold and windy out, so bring it in. ;-)

Here's a picture of mine. He had said, I could get by with it, but it wasn't ideal. This tree was only in this mix a few weeks till I could move it too gritty mix and better pot. So I didn't worry about it too much, if it would have been longer, I would not have used it.
