Pine Bark Fines (Which one of these)

dapperFebruary 22, 2011

I have yet to see any pictures of Pine Bark Fines. Nothing at any garden center I have been to is labeled that way either. I did read on one post here that Lowe's calls it "Soil Conditioner" I stopped by a local recycling center which has all kinds of mulches and compost. THey have what they call "Soil Conditioner" which looks nothing like Lowes, and they have pine bark mulch. I am posting 3 pic, one of each. Please tell me if any of these is what is being reffered to as Pine Bark Fines?

They are still not working.
If your using photobucket, you can just copy and paste the html code into your post and when you look at the preview it should show your picture.

Looks like the soil conditioner is the closest, but the other two would probably work just as well for a soil addiditve.

From what I can tell, with only the relative size of the paper plate for scale,
the particles are all too large. The Lowe's conditioner *might* work when screened,
but the pic itself is too small for me to tell. The yellow colored pieces are sapwood,
which need to be removed, as they will decompose more rapidly than the outer bark -
leading to nitrogen binding and potential heat-spikes in the container mix.

The material at 3,6, and 9 are all good for the 5:1:1 mix, as is. They would be fine for the gritty mix after screening. The fir bark at the top comes prescreened & is what I consider an ideal size for the gritty mix. The soil in the center is what the 5:1:1 mix I make looks like dry.

This is the Zoo-Med Repti-Bark fir bark I use, pictured next to other ingredients... perlite, turface, and granite chips. It's available at PetsMart or anywhere reptile supplies and bedding are sold. The quarter is for size reference.
