Mystery bulbs

madabouteu(8A - central Alabama)June 2, 2010

Someone whose name i do not know gave me a bunch of bulbs whose names I also do not know! She only gave their ID as husband-and-wife bulbs! They look very much like undersize narcissus bulbs; like them, they are true bulbs, tunicate, and with bulblets developing from the base of the older bulbs (thus the name that the donor gave me!). They seem to be completely dormant, not a speck of green. This is in northern Alabama in late May. I am wondering if they may be Lycoris, since that plant is dormant right now. Any thoughts?

I googled "husband and wife plant" and the results suggested this was a common name for Maranta kerchoveana or Maranta leuconeura

The best thing you can do is to plant them and see what they do. I have never heard of anything called that, but it certainly is intriguing! Let us know what becomes of them! It is possible that they are lycoris. Lycoris have a very dark brown tunicate, for what that's worth. :)

Maranta leuconeura and/or kerchoveana are common tropical houseplants also known as Prayer Plants and are most definitely not a garden bulb.

So, I'd plant them and you'll know next year or toss them.
