Topping a Large Potted Avocado

nerdyshopperFebruary 18, 2014

I have an avocado plant that is about 15 years old. It has a habit of growing up and up and refusing to branch out. About 5 years ago a Mexican employee told me he grew up where they farmed avocados and mine should bear fruit if I would prune the top and what branches there were severely. I did so and the poor thing just stopped growing---didn't die but stopped growing. Last year we moved it where it could get more sunlight and it started growing new leaves and the branches again reach for the ceiling. I am afraid to prune it again but It is bending over at the ceiling and I must do something. Anyone got experience with this problem and its solution?

Yes, they really do want to grow up and up :-)
I think the answer is pruning this Summer - in conjunction with the assurance that the root-system is healthy. I've pruned my own Avocado many times to encourage a more compact plant. If you want to contain your tree, you'll need a pruning strategy for the long-term. Post pics if you can.
