DO rhodies back bud??

paul3636(6a Ma.)March 26, 2011

A rhody was collected from the wild so I don't know what kind it is

It has a nicely curved trunk and long branches.

A few of the branches have been wired and some cut back.

Do rhodies back bud??

If they do I'll prune more branches.

Is there any thing I should know about its care in a container.

This has also been posted on bonsai forum with a picture and may be posted on broad leaf shrubs.

Hi, Paul - you're just a-gunnin' for those yamadori, aren't you? ;o) Yes they do back-bud - vigorously. You prolly already know they prefer a fast soil in containers and have very fine root systems. They have some extra difficulty assimilating most micro-nutrients at pHs much above 5.5 in containers, so you MIGHT want to consider a fertilizer that has all the micro-nutrients each time you fertilize.

It would also be helpful to check the pH of your water & see how much vinegar or citric acid it takes to bring the pH of water (fresh from the tap) down to a pH of 4.5-5.0, then add that amount each time you water.

Good luck.

There are many wild and urban yamadori available if you keep your eyes open so I'm concentrating my searches on yamadori.
I was thinking of using miracid for fertilizer and as far as watering goes you guys send us enough acid rain that I shouldn't have to worry about it.:o)
