Bark/Kanuma for Mix?

MissMudPuppy(z7 - L.I.)March 14, 2013

Quick question: which bark should I be using for the 5-1-1 & Gritty Mix: Fir, Cedar, Cypress, or Gorilla Hair?

Also, has anyone used Kanuma in their mix?

Generally speaking, pine bark is used in the 5:1:1 mix. For the gritty mix, pine and fir bark work equally well on a size for size basis. I use fir because I get it prescreened, but in the earlier years of using it, I screened pine bark & used that. With the volumes of soil I use now, the 'prescreened thing' saves a lot of effort. Cedar that smells like cedar is prolly not a good choice.

Kanuma could be used as a fraction of either soil, but its expensive - usually reserved for mature bonsai that prefer acidic soils.

Thank you for the clarification, Al! Going to make the 2 hour trek out to Agway for my materials. Love that place! They have everything I need, including the elusive Turface MVP & poultry grit (no oyster shell).

Happy planting!
