Is there a good purchased potting mix?

liz_h(7/8 DFW Texas)March 31, 2012

I want to use one or two large SWC's this year. Any suggestions for a potting mix to purchase? I'm trying to keep this whole operation as simple as possible. (DH will have to do the actual work, not me) I'll use one for a tomato plant, and one for herbs.

Fafard makes some good mixes, if you can find them. Their 'Nursery Mix' is best, after that, I'd choose the '51L Mix', then their '#3 Mix'.

I'm not sure if you want to invest the time, but by making your own (would entail some reading & legwork) you'd end up with a better product at half the price.

Thanks Al. Making my own is not an option right now - I can handle the reading, but not the legwork. I looked for the Fafard mixes. They're only available to the trade in this area.

I prefer the 511 mix myself, but FWIW I saw that Home Depot was stocking Pro-Mix this year.

Miracle gro potting mix is one of the best. I stand by it.
