Help! Grape hyacinths have sprouted!

elberethOctober 13, 2009

I have some grape hyacinth bulbs in big outdoor pots that sprouted leaves at the end of September. They're now one to two inches long. I live in Toronto, Canada so the weather's getting cold. Will the blooms wait till spring if I put the pots into an unheated garage? Or will they flower now that the leaves have sprouted? Should I bring the pots inside so they can bloom indoors? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks,

elbereth

This is perfectly normal for grape hyacinth/muscari - which are perfectly hardy down to Zone 3. I don't have any in containers, but mine in the ground will often sprout leaves in the fall; they don't set buds at this time, however. They survive my Zone 4 Minnesota winters and always bloom at the normal time in the spring.

I wouldn't recommend bringing them in - forcing bulbs expends all their energy rendering them virtually worthless for any future use.

My muscari did this last fall and have are up again now. They bloomed just fine this past spring so I think it's perfectly normal. Mine are in the ground but I wouldn't bring them inside. They should bloom fine in the spring for you.

My grape hyacinths always sprout in fall. They bloom without any problem each spring. Don't worry. It's normal.
