Substitute for turface??

PunkyduckktMarch 25, 2011

Does anyone know if Fluorite planted aquarium substrate could be used as a substitute for the turface in the gritty mix? It is a broken porous stable clay. I have quite a few pounds left over from an old aquarium and would like to put it to use.

What's the particle size?

While I have not read or heard of this item being used as a turface substitute, I'm not familiar with it so I couldn't say with any certainty.

Particle size is one definite consideration.

I'm including a link to a great website on Bonsai that contains a lot of information on using different items in the making of mediums. About halfway down the page I linked to there are two other links to follow... An Introduction to Bonsai Soils and Cat Litter as Bonsai Soil. Somewhere on those pages, I do believe, is information on turface substitutes and how to test ingredients by wetting, heating and freezing to see if they hold up and can be used.

I hope you find the information you're looking for... I only wish I could be more helpful.

Here is a link that might be useful: Bonsai Basics

I just returned from my local John Deere supply store and unfortunately, they do not carry Turface MVP. They do have Allsport Pro. Is this product a good substitute for Turface MVP?
