Earthtainer 2.0 soil revitalization?

l1a1rocker(8)April 6, 2012

Tried posting this last night but I guess I hit a wrong button. Here we go again.

I've got 5 Earthtainers built on the 2.0 plans. They've been sitting all winter and it's time to get them ready again for transplanting.

I mixed the soil according to the instructions last year and now need to revitalize the soil. What's the best way to do this? Should I take out all the soil, or just the top 1/3? How much fertilizer and lime should I add to the soil? Will I need to put in more perelite also?

Thank you in advance for all your help.

You should read the current EarthTainer Guide. Most of your questions are answered there. In brief, remove the root ball and adjacent Grow Media. Use this elsewhere in the yard. Remove most of the remaining Grow Media into a mixing bucket and then combine in new Grow Media using a 3:3:1 ratio (yes, more Microbark). You will need to add new Lime and fertilizer as you did originally planting.

You should be able to do this for a total of 4 to 5 Seasons before having to begin with all new Grow Media.
