cutting back a banana

micyreySeptember 13, 2006

hello

my mother in law has an 8' banana tree in a pot we are zone 5 and she has a great place to put inside. but it may be too tall to get through the doors, can we cut it back then bring it in the house?

thanks michelle

i live in zone 7 and i dig mine up every winter and wrap the root ball in plastic so i can water them about once every 3 weeks, i cut my 18 foot trees down to about 5 feet. and store them in unheated garage. if we dont have a very bad winter they try to keep growing. so i will water less so they will sleep through winter. not much less tho.
hope this helps.
hope you have a
blooming good day

The banana "trunk" is a pseudo trunk formed by the base of the leaves. As long as you don't cut the corm severely and keep it lightly moisted, new leaves will grow from the corm once the plant is exposed to the right temperature and moisture.
