How do I get more leaves on blueberry plants?

edweather(Zone 5a/b Central NY)May 26, 2012

I know that the question sounds weird. Shouldn't I want more berries? Well, I was just looking at the thread of posted blueberry pictures, and I noticed that a lot of the plants are very nicely leafed out. I'm a novice grower, and I have a 4 yo Bluecrop, and a 3 yo Blueray, and several younger plants, all in containers, here in Northern NY. Both the Bluecrop and the Blueray are loaded with berries. The Bluecrop has some leaves, and the Blueray has very few leaves. Neither is like the ones I'm seeing in these pictures as far as leaves go. Should I do something to get more leaves or should I just be happy they are growing well and producing well? Thanks. Ed.

If you want to grow more leaves and or more berries, you need to fertilize. Don't take it personal that no one responded, due to this time of the year most of us are very busy out in the garden.

Which fertilizer to use you may ask? Well, it all depends on if you want to go the organic or synthetic approach.

edweather, fertilizer is the short answer BUT the nutrient - nitrogen - which will cause "green and growth" - will also work against flowering and fruiting.
Application of nitrogen close to flowering time might inhibit flowering and consequently, fruiting. Late application of nitrogen has caused plants to drop flowers or young fruits en masse. > LINK
