5-1-1 mix for potatoes

thinkstoomuch(6)May 9, 2011

Hi All,

I've been trying to find information about growing potatoes in containers. Found lots of different posts, but not so many on using 5-1-1 mix for potatoes. I plan to use either a 30 gallon rubbermaid container, or maybe a half wine barrel. I also plan to use drip irrigagion for this. If anyone has thoughts or experience on using the 5-1-1 mix for potatoes, I'd love to hear your comments.

In particular:

1. Include the lime?

2. I have access to municipal leaf compost. It is very nice looking, but I admit, this will be the first year using it in my gardens. Would the leaf compost be a good addition to the 5-1-1 mix?

3. Suggestions on fertilizing the potatoes as they grow? What to use and how often?

I'm growing potatoes right now in the 5:1:1. I included a CRF and left out the lime from my mix, but if I had it to do over again, I probably would have just put some lime in, maybe 1/2 tbsp per gallon of mix, then I wouldn't have had to worry about the calcium and magnesium. The potatoes will still grow well. My potatoes appear to be growing well, and I fertilize with Foliage Pro at 1/4 strength with each watering. I also add a tbsp of vinegar to each gallon of water.
