firepit log-lighter

mike909_2010April 2, 2010

I've been sent to this website a number of times from searches, so figured I'd go ahead and ask...see if anyone's done anything like this:

I would like to set up a firepit with one of the fire-rings ( like this one: http://www.gasproductscompany.com/gas-products/square-fire-ring-only-18.html ) with the ability to also burn real wood, should I want to. Ideally, I would have the ability to use my gas fire-ring only, but also wanted to be able to place wood in there on occasion. Basically, using the fire-ring as a "log-lighter". Just wondering if theirs any real reason I couldn't. I know the old "log lighters" are essentially just a steel pipe with holes drilled in. My suspicion is that I just need the shut-off valve away from any burning fire, and in this case it will be inside the cmu wall. See my drawings at:

Sorry, I don't know how to embed the drawing directly into this post.

Here is a link that might be useful: firepit drawing

I'm far from an expert but I would be afraid of clogging the gas jets with wood ash and damaging the pipes for the gas.

I think before you go further with this idea I'd check with the gas company and those who install the firepits

if you place the holes in the pipe facing downward it will not clog. Looks like a great fire-pit from the drawings. Looks like this post was back in April . Have you finished your pit yet ? any pictures? I plan on building one soon in my back yard using rough cut white limestone type rocks. Natural gas runs to my grill right now but i will tee off of it and create a black pipe line going thru the wall of my pit with a shut off valve at the tee where the grill is. should be nice when complete
