Container Plum

saraheugeneMay 10, 2012

Hi Folks,

I have an Italian plum tree that I planned to plant in the ground but I'm now doubting that I have enough sun. My yard is heavily populated buy oak and fir trees. I have plenty of sun on my deck though and am wondering if I could grow the plum (max height 10-12') in a container on the deck. I haven't been able to find much info. Will I just have to stay on top of the pruning?

Thanks so much,

Pruning above and below the soil line should be a part of your long term plan. If you're to see your tree grow that large, you'll need to know how to maintain it in a container. Then, after gaining the ability to maintain trees in containers over the long term, you will have winnowed your worries to mostly how to prevent toppling of something so large.
