Plants Not Growing In New Container Garden

PennCoveGardenerMay 16, 2011

I set up a couple container gardens this spring, both 3'x5', filled about 18" deep with a soil/compost mix from the garden center called "vegetable soil mix". I have a bunch of different vegetables planted from starts, as well as carrots, beets, and radishes planted from seeds.

I fertilize every 3 weeks with a liquid fertilizer and water every 2-3 days.

With a few exceptions, none of my plants have gotten any bigger. Some have been sitting, with their two coteledin and their two true leaves, for over two months. They aren't yellowing, wilting, or dying. Nor are they growing. The same with the sprouts from seed - I have rows of two-leaved beet and carrot plants sitting for over 6 weeks, never getting any bigger, not looking sick in any way.

Any suggestions as to what the problem may be would be much appreciated!

Sounds like either not enough sun or it's too cold.

My warm weather container peppers & eggplants are also just sitting around waiting for warm weather.

The carrots and radishes may be doing OK but for everything else it is too early. A soil thermometer is cheap and would help you decide when to plant summer vegetables. Al
