Al, Raybo. anyone.... help me build a mix

patiogarden_2010May 19, 2011

I have given up the idea of gritty in my self watering containers. I will use it to repot one of my kiwis to a conventional container.

I want a durable wicking potting mix for my kiwis. I realize I give a little on both ends by trying to have it all. I don't want to repot annually... as a matter of fact I don't want to repot for years. I can feed and flush to keep the tds from getting too high.

Here's the deal.... kiwi fruits on new growth that comes off of old growth. Cutting it down from the trellis to repot it I'm afraid I might loose to much growth getting it off the trellis. The vines get woody and twine... think wisteria like. At least they grow really fast. I had flowers 1st year after planting little twigs.

So what kind of mix would you guys suggest????

If I may?

Just my two cents.

I would use a version of the 5.1.1 mix by adding a bit more peat. I will say that even an amended version of the 5.1.1 will last you longer than a bagged mix in which the majority of base of those mixes is fine particulates.

I have wondered if the gritty will work if extra turface was added? I think it was talked about before, but I just can't remember:-)

You will get some great advice here and your plants will do just wonderful!
