containers second year

ladysmith(Toronto,Ont.Can)May 26, 2011

I have some large containers in my front yard. They were absolutely gorgeous last year. My biggest thrill were the flowers on the sweet potato vines.

Time to do them up again for this year. Do I replace the soil that was there, and if so, how far down? Or can I just remove the bulk of the roots, take out a couple of inches and top dress with something like sheep manure?

All advice welcome!!

Thanks

What kind of soil mix did you use last year? If you used a peat based mix, it has probably broken down and will need to be mostly replaced. How big are the containers and how well do they drain? If they are like mini-raised beds, large with excellent drainage, you might be able to reuse a lot of the mix. What plants are you planning to put in them this year? Hungry plants (like sweet potatoes) will do better in fresher soil.

The mix is Verandah Mix, which is a lot of peat. I had sweet potato vines in them (which bloomed and bloomed!!). The pots are largeish, 12" wide and deep (more or less). Sounds like I need to replace the soil...
I'm planting green and purple sweet potatoes, petunias, geraniums and bacopa.

Thanks for taking the time to respond.
