Designer Grow Light Set Up

cottagegardenlover(9b)June 22, 2013

I'm interested in growing some camellia and lemon trees indoors and will need to supplement the light with grow lights, but they are all soooo ugly!

I have some beautiful planters and wonder if anyone can help me design a lighting system that is functional and attractive?

I was thinking of using an attractive clamp light like this one:

on the top edge of the pot, or maybe one with a longer neck to reach higher up.

Then I would hang a pendant light from the ceiling and put grow lightbulbs in the light fixtures.

I'm wondering if the wattage on the grow lightbulbs will be too high for regular light fixtures?

Any ideas or suggestions?

Thanks!
Lucy

(BTW They will receive natural light and I have made some attractive mylar mirrors to place on the wall behind them to help reflect more light as well.)

grow lights like metal halide or high pressure sodium require a special ballast. If you want a decent looking pendant metal halide (MH), look at the ones available for salt water aquariums.

Okay,
But what about the grow bulbs that can be screwed into a regular lamp? Are they insufficient as a supplemental light if I have some sunlight and reflective mylar?

How many watts would I need?

Thanks,
Lucy :)

Incandescent and screw in compact fluorescents are all junk. Don't waste your money. I don't know how many watts you'll need for those. You might want to ask about lights in the hydroponics forum.
