Pruning Pansies

nanook13June 13, 2006

I grew pansies this year and in my 14inch pot, they grew so large that they had stems well over 2 ft in length and began to droop and fall. I trimmed them back to stems of 6 inches or so. Anyone ever done that? (I'm a newbie) I assumed that by June the pansies would be done for, but they are only get morning sun and we've had a cool spring so they are doing excellent.

Hi Nannook13:

I've cut mine back as well, pulled them out of the pots they were in and put them in a cool spot with morning sun. I hoping to keep them alive during the summer and bloom again in the fall.

I have cut back a few long stems, but mine are still blooming pretty well at a good height. Cool and rainy here too. Mine are in part sun too. I am trying to deadhead to keep them going, but I do want them to go to seed, so, not sure how long I should keep that up. I don't want them to exhaust themselves and then get into the heat and not produce any seed. I am thinking of starting more seedlings for the fall.
