rose and perennial bed color choices

jimnyo(8 (SoCal))April 1, 2010

hi, i've got a bed that i just ripped out to dirt that has 3 english roses left: a pink, an apricot-pink and a yellow. i HAD to have 2 more roses--double delight (white with red edged petals) and mr.lincoln (deep red). i figured i'd just put them all in the same bed. but now, as i'm trying to plan companion perennials around them, i am having a hard time juggling the pastels with the reds. have i committed a color no-no or is there a visually pleasing way around this?

Bboy's idea is good. Also just more greenery in general.

But also, I've never actually been bothered by colour clashes between flowers. the only thing that's ever really bothered me have been certain oranges, but not in roses. The colours you list wouldn't bother me at all to combine, I don't think.

Nepeta is a popular choice for underplanting roses.
