What to plant with annual (flowering) vinca?

luvmygoldenpupJune 16, 2011

I am working on getting my porch boxes planted that will go along the rails of my deck. The area gets full, intense sun until about 1 or so in the afternoon, at which time it gets indirect light (not shade) due to the orientation of our house. There is no shade until later in the afternoon.

My geraniums last year didn't look all that great. I think that the heat was just too much for them. (I live in upstate NY, but they get intense heat kicked up from the dark deck I guess). I found some annual vinca (compact flowering plant, not the vine) at our local greenhouse that looked like it would be a good fit. I like the look of mixed flowers in a planter. What would work well to mix in with the vinca?

Thanks SO much! Looking forward to beautiful porch boxes this year.

Marigolds are quite easy and heat tolerant. Maybe petunias?
