I have a lot of slabs of sandstone in different sizes. I have four columns on my front porch that are square that needs dressing up. Can I use the sandstone sort of like a stone veneer and cover the columns about a third of the way up?

It's likely that rain water would become trapped between the stone slabs and the columns, shortening the life of any wood.
