Male cucumber flowers have no pollen!

dsi411March 11, 2014

HI, I'm growing bush champion cucumbers indoors. A female flower has opened. I was so happy and then I saw that a male flower was open too! So I took off the male and took off all the petals to pollinate, but there was NO pollen in the male flower! I rubbed it in the female just in case but is this normal? I've grown a different type of cucumber indoors and the male flowers had pollen. What went wrong????

Many possible causes - air temps, light, nutrients, watering, - but with young plants and first/early blooms it is fairly common. Just be patient.

You have to do that early in the morning before the bees get to work. They can carry off huge amounts of pollen. I've seen them so heavily laden that they have dificulty flying.

Probably there are plenty of pollens but one cannot always detect them visually. Some plants like lillies have tons of pollen, many don't have that much.
