Using broken concrete for fill

fredmcMay 10, 2010

My son has bought a house that had a concrete pad for a garage. He wants to get rid of the concrete. He also has to fill a corner of his yard to level it out. I suggested he use the broken concrete from the concrete pad as fill. He can dig out some of the dirt(with a machine) and use the broken concrete as fill and then put the dirt over top.

Is this a good solution? How much dirt should go over the concrete filler?

Thanks

Fred

Eventually that busted up concrete will surface...as is happening in my yard. I have no idea who put it there...done LONG before we bought the house--but it's a pain to deal with now. I dig it out where I can...and disguise it with plants/rocks where I can't dig it out. Ugh.

Granted, it may be years, but why make a mess for someone else? Either rent a dumpster and dispose of it properly, or put it up on craigslist and see if someone wants it for a retaining wall. I've seen pretty cool "drystackesque" walls made with busted up concrete pads.
