Help me iron out my mango problems!

greenthumbon1handJune 6, 2014

Hi,

I have a cogshall mango in a clay pot outside (in Ft. Lauderdale) and it's planted in Vigoro organic potting mix, and I'm pretty positive it has an iron deficiency. A garden center recommended I spray Southern Ag chelated liquid iron on the leaves (so I bought it), but should I pour it on the soil instead? Would that acidify the soil (I've read that if the soil is too alkaline, iron isn't in a form available to the mango)? Is the clay pot contributing to the problem? Also, I dumped in some pellets of 6-4-6 fish and kelp fertilizer - should I scoop those out before I apply the iron?

Thanks!!!

Leave the pellets; follow the directions on the package for the soil-application of the iron. I'm not a fan of foliar spraying.

Thanks for the reply! Will that lower the pH of the soil? And is that the problem in the first place?

I don't know. But in containers, the pH of the mix itself isn't as important as when growing in-ground. If the fertigating solution has the right pH, all should be well.

how did you start the plant from seed? I also live in broward county fl. and have tried to start a mango seed in clay pots. is it like an avocado seed, where you start it in water? none of the seeds that i have tried to get to grow have ever sprouted.

I got mine from Pepe's fruit trees. I have started them from seed (by laying them on their side in the dirt and keeping a plastic bag over to keep them moist), but you can't be sure of the taste once they reach fruiting age.
