What to do with the side yard?

Robin GoodrichMay 9, 2013

We are considering purchasing a home where the yard is mainly a side yard rather than back, so I am curious about landscaping options. The neighbors have planted trees behind the home that will eventually grow tall enough for privacy, but I am wondering what we might do from the front. I don't necessarily need my yard to be completely hidden and I don't think a whole row of privacy bushes would look good. However, I would like to do some landscaping by the side closest to the road so it's not a clear view of our whole yard from the front.

We would have to add a 3-4ft fence for our dogs, so how could we place it without cutting our yard size in half? When it comes to plants, would we place some on each side of the fence so it looks nice from curb as well as our view? I don't want the side yard to be a deal breaker, especially since it is good sized. I just want to make sure it'll work for us. Let me know what you think!
