Best method/materials for added gravel path on side of house?

mgb_May 4, 2012

The area on the side of my house is very compacted and doesnt grow grass well and in the winter when it rains it becomes a mess. Id like to add crushed gravel along the side of the house but Im not sure what the best type to add and if there is anything else I need to do. I planned on having the first few inches of soil dug up and then just adding the crushed gravel directly on top. Is that fine? Any thing else I should do? What type of gravel should I use? I keep the garbage/recycling on the side of the house and bring my mower through this area.

Once the tree is out and your drainage issue is taken care of, the right kind of grass might grow just fine.

Otherwise, decomposed granite might be a good solution there.
