Question about inserting wicks

squirrelwhispererpup(9a)July 21, 2013

Does it matter if the material is cotton instead of rayon?
In the pictures I have viewed, the knot is situated to the side of the pot drain hole. If the knot sits at the drain hole, will it impede the wicking action?

Sorry for simplistic and concrete questions but I have learned that I should not assume something is unimportant until I check with folks who have more experience.

Cotton will work, it just will not last near as long as a synthetic. Al

S...I have wondered the same things. I do not know about the knot. It does seem like cotton holds water better than rayon or poly....huh?

I have never found a knot was needed. Ability to hold water is not required, it is the conduction of the water we are looking for. I only use synthetic in my containers. Al

OK...I am thinking that my thinking is wrong. The soak-ability (holds water) issue (cotton is best) is not the thing that draws out water from a container. How do it know? Is it some kind of cohesion type thing?

Synthetic fiber does not absorb water. A bundle of synthetic fibers acts like a straw to conduct water by gravity from the top of the bundle to the bottom. Cotton absorbs water and gravity still moves the water through the fibers, but at a much slower rate. Al

A....thankyou for the heads up! It sounds like rayon, poly, or nylon rope sure would make more sense than cotton.
