Red Mulch for Tomato Containers

EvanDJuly 19, 2011

I've heard a lot about using red mulch for tomatoes and have seen it used in an in-ground tomato garden as a topper above the topsoil (also some using red plastic sheeting as weed cover).

Has anyone used this in their containers as the top layer?

I was thinking of using the 5:1:1 mix and then the red mulch on top.

My daughter who lives on the coast and has trouble getting enough sun and heat for her tomatoes, tried it and could not tell any difference. Al

I used it in my containers with 511 for tomatoes this year for about a month. But we've had such high temps for the past couple weeks that I am having to water every other day. Just to make sure the whole pot is getting drenched, I have to remove the mulch. It became too much of a bother. My tomatoes are having a tough year largely due to the weather, but also due to more disease and insect attacks. I can't see that the mulch has provided any benefit, but I really don't know. They are just now beginning to ripen, which is later than average for me.
