Castor Beans close to the Vegetable Garden

CAST1(9b Arizona)April 14, 2012

Someone told me it was dangerous to grow castor beans close to a vegetable garden because the vegetables might become poisonous. Is this true ?

No. In bygone years, castor beans were called molebeans and most folks let a few grow scattered about the garden in the belief that they would deter moles. They are huge plants however, so unless you have an acre or more in garden, not recommended.

I like planting them in my garden because they give a nice show. Give the garden a tropical look. I tried them because they should help get rid of moles and the like. I was thinking the young seedlings will give a few pests a sore stomach, hopefully turning them off my garden.
