Mold in my gritty?

kernul1July 1, 2011

So I was removing some stakes I had used for transplant plant support and when I pulled them out they all had what appeared to be mold on them. This only happened in one section of a planter box filled with gritty.

Any idea what this is (mold?). Is it damaging to the plants? Should I retransplant with fresh gritty?

Note this window container is on a north facing window and gets no direct light. I also have about 25 containers in the gritty mix now and this is the only one I have seen it in.

Hey, Kernul, I've found some mold on my wooden skewer, as well.
I haven't noticed any negative effects on the plant in the container (a Black Pearl pepper),
so I'm going to assume it's not a problem. I did wipe the skewer off the first time I saw it.

Plants live in harmony with thousands of species of fungi & molds, only a few of which cause problems under certain circumstances, so I wouldn't worry about it too much unless you start seeing issues you're quite sure are related.

Great. Thanks Josh and Al! I'll let it be then and just monitor the plants.

Thanks!

Hi everyone.

I had some on a stick I left in one of my pots too. I just assumed it was natural when moisture rests against wood in dark places anyway.
