what small flowers can i grow in tiny pots?

jardin_de_mariaJuly 28, 2010

I have a small shelf by my window. I would like to grow small flowering plants by my window. The pots can't be that huge, maybe 6" wide or smaller. And I have a really tiny one that's maybe 3" wide. They're terra cotta pots. It would be really cute to have plants grow in these tiny things :D

What can I start from seed? It never gets below 70 degrees here, and it's mostly humid. Very near the equator :) But I will be keeping these indoors so it won't be in the scorching sun.

Try Sweet Allysum, maybe lobelia.

I though about African violets, too, but I'm afraid they won't tolerate that heat.

Maybe some dischidias, like this one of mine. It's being grown in a coconut shell.

Standard size African Violets would be much too large - the spread on a plant in a 6 inch pot would be about 18". Small standards or semiminiature ones in 2" pots would work depending on the amount of light that comes through. I keep my blinds down during the summer (have a southern exposure) and they do fine.

Alternately, many other Gesneriads like bright light, though not direct sun, and humid environments.

Balsom Roses, peppermint, spearmint? You can look into the fairy gardens, most are bonsai type plants, but they have a variety of small plants to choose from, you might even try bonsai instead of planting small plants.
