fall mums & garden relocations,

hookilau(long island NY)August 20, 2012

In preparation for fall, this year will be my first of the last 10 yrs we've owned our house, to actually get mums in August, rather than October.

I got 30 3" pots, 10 of each color, yellow, orange & maroon. We scattered them about the landscape with a fair amt. of space around each one for room for growth & considering the landscape for next year.

I'm in zone 7 (Long Island NY) How do I care for them as the weather turns colder? I thought I would cut them down & cover in mulch. How do you handle your mums? I'd rather they did not become like shrubs & remain mounded & neat.

Ooops. Forgot to mention, I saved some to put in pots. Since we are approaching cooler weather here in NY, would using the gritty mix be prudent?

Our nighttime temps have dropped dramatically in the past week or so, mid 60's.
