potatoes over a cement slab

cheryllmartel(6b)April 14, 2014

I have an area right in front of our deck, which used to be a sidewalk..........I have put new soil there..........but was wondering what would be the best veggies to plant there? How deep does it need to be ? I was hoping to grow potatoes there? Advice?

You can grow potatoes in soil 6 inches to 12 inches deep or more. If you have at least 3 inches of soild lay your seed potatoes on top of it then cover with 3 inches of soil. As the plant grows out of the soil; add soil, up to about 12-14 inches.

That sounds like a good spot for herbs that you could access easily from your deck. Otherwise, the suggestions from charlieboring are great!

What is the drainage like? Does the cement slab cause the new soil you put in to puddle up during heavy rain?
